The L2 pilot study – CROWN – will be divided into two parts: In a first large-scale study, 1,200 participants will be asked to rate a total of 80 odor molecules in different dimensions and to complete questionnaires about their personality and experience with odors. In a second step, 60 participants from the first part of the study will be invited again and physiological measurements will be performed while smelling different odors. In this way, we provide a broad study of odor perception with subjective and objective measurements complemented by machine learning approaches to investigate the underlying rules of human perception. For the second part, a device called an „olfactometer“ will be used to deliver precise odors to study participants. The study will be conducted in collaboration with the Department of Clinical Psychology at FSU Jena, which can provide an ideal laboratory setting to study peripheral physiological measures.
